Stafford Municipal School District
Stafford has the only municipal school district in the state. Its
creation by the city in 1977 and its five-year successful
battle for implementation is one of the most storied in
Texas educational annals. When the people of Stafford voted
for the creation of the municipal district and supported
it through some of the fiercest court and political opposition
seen in this state, they envisioned a strong partnership
between the city and the district to make joint decisions
and provide special opportunities for the children.
Because of this unique relationship between
the city and Stafford Municipal School District over the years, the children
of Stafford have been afforded some exceptional benefits,
including city police officers in the schools, free swimming
lessons in the city's heated pool, televised
school events on the city's access television channel and
use of the city's impressive civic center for many of their
programs and banquets. The city also provides SMSD favorable
arrangements for maintenance of the district's grounds and
athletic fields.
All SMSD grades, one through twelve, are located on the
campus grounds, with elementary, middle and high schools
separate from, but next door to, each other. Student enrollment
at the close of the 2005-2006 school year was 3,106. The average class size of 15-18 students.
